Get to Know Us

Here at The Glookie Foundation, we are committed to making life easier for families of Type 1 Kids. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, our goal is to help families afford the technology necessary to manage this disease. We understand the burden that managing Type 1 Diabetes can place on a family and want to do everything in our power to help.

About Juvenile Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin regulates blood sugar levels and when the pancreas stops producing insulin, kids must get insulin through injections.Juvenile diabetes can be a dangerous disease if not carefully managed every day. A Type 1 kid cannot run by and grab even a handful of grapes without first pricking a finger to find out the current blood sugar and then calculating the carbohydrate count so the correct amount of insulin can be injected before he/she eats the grapes. A Type 1 kid must be a mathematician, coach, nurse and in tune with his/her blood sugar every minute of every day. Blood sugar that is too high or too low can result in organ damage, seizures, and other complications.Symptoms in children can come on quickly and may include extreme thirst, hunger, unintentional weight loss, frequent urination and irritability or change in behavior.

MEET GLOOKIE

Glookie is the artistic impression of a glucose tablet created by an 8 year old Type 1 child and is just one of the supplies that Type 1 kids must carry with them every day. Type 1 kids carry 2 bags to school; a backpack for books and another for diabetes supplies which include glucose tabs, lancets and testing strips, insulin, syringes, needle tips, alcohol wipes etc. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is working toward a cure, and we support them and hope you do too. The Glookie Foundation aims to help kids living with Type 1 Diabetes manage the disease a little easier through technology. If you know a Type 1 kid, you know a real hero.
